This wonderful ruin by Wenlock Edge on the Welsh Border of Shropshire is everything a ruin should be. There are bags of atmosphere in these red sandstone remains of a thirteenth century fortified manor house.

Acton Burnell was built by Robert Burnell during the reign of King Edward I (born 1239, died 1307) Robert Burnell was made Bishop of Bath and Wales.

Since the 1600's the castle ruins have stood as a folly. Acton Burnell can be found about half way between the village of Cressage and the A49 at Leebotwood. Acton Burnell Castle is under the care of English Heritage.

One of the great medieval castles of England.
