Bewcastle Castle
Bewcastle Castle was built in 1092 AD
Demense Farm,
Bewcastle
CA6 6PT
The Romans built a fort here and in the 11th Century a new castle was built on the same spot to defend against the Scots from whom the land had recently been annexed by the Norman King William II.
Abandoned around 1640, Bewcastle castle's gatehouse is now a ruin within the grounds of Demense Farm.
The gatehouse is one of Cumberland's most romantic ruins and You may recognise it because it is often used in fotography of classic romantic ruins.
One of the great medieval castles of England.
