John de Handlo the Sheriff of Oxford was given licence to crenellate Boarstall Castle in 1312.

It is known that King Charles I visited Boarstall Castle which suffered three attacks during the Civil War before being taken by the redoubtable Sir Thomas Fairfax after a siege in 1646 .

Boarstall Castle was given to the National Trust in 1943.

One of the great medieval castles of England.
