A picture-perfect moated castle complete with three drawbridges and a barbican.

After the Norman Conquest, the Bodeham family took over and lived in the Saxon hall that had previously been built on the site. After a number of generations this was replaced with the stone castle (1385 by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge).

Like so many others, Bodiam was "slighted" by Parliamentary forces after the Civil War. It was not until the early 20th Century that the old place was restored to its former glory.
