The saxon Bulmer family owned the castle before the Norman invasion of 1066. Ownership was transferred to the Neville Family in 1174 and stayed with them until 1569 taken as compensation by Queen Elizabeth for putting down the uprising.

According to the local guidebook Sir Henry Bellaysyse owned the castle for a while and his daughter Mary fell in love with BOBBY SHAFTOE. Her love for him was immortalised in the famous song of the same name.

One of the great medieval castles of England.
