Cadbury Castle

Cadbury Castle was built in 500BC(?) AD

Castle Hill, South Cadbury, Sparkford

BA22 7

The importance of Cadbury Castle near Sparkford in Somerset to british archaeology is well known. Excavations in the 1960s revealed Roman forts re-fortified in post-Roman times. The ramparts were strengthened with masonry from derelict Roman buildings and surmounted by raised wooden walkways. The height would have made Cadbury Castle a very strongly defended position

The castle is mentioned in the Domesday Book. "William of Mohun holds Torre and there is his castle"

Local tradition associates Cadbury Castle with King Arthur's Camelot, home to the knights of the round table. The plateau at the top is known as Arthur's Palace.

Access to Cadbury castle requires visitors to park in South Cadbury (where there is an excellent little pub) and walk up the hill across the road.

One of the great medieval castles of England.
