Castle Drogo

Castle Drogo was built in 1910 AD

Castle Drogo is the highest National Trust run Castle in the country, at at 900 feet above sea level, overlooking the Teign Gorge on the edge of Dartmoor.

Castle Drogo is also the 'last castle to be built in England', having been created by Sir Edwin Lutyens for the millionaire tea baron Julius Drewe in the period 1910 to 1930. The exterior at first glance is a classical crennelated castle, but the proportions are more squat that one expects then the 20th century design features catch the eye and one's interest is piqued. The interior is a strange mix of mock medieval and 20th century homeliness that is far more fascinating than many older castles.

We found the staff, dressed up as they would have been in the early twentieth century, to be informative and entertaining and sometimes almost too authentic. Nicola remarked that it felt we had time-travelled back by four score decades at one point as a silent butler floated past holding a silver tray with teacups and saucers on it.They cater to tourism very well.

Outside there are herb gardens, rose gardens, a formal Croquet Lawn and lovely woodland paths feeaturing rhododendrons and magnolias to walk around.

To be honest, I was expecting very little from castle Drogo, but came away very pleasantly surprised by the fun and information available.

One of the great medieval castles of England.
