Castle Howard was built in 1699 AD

York

YO60 7DA

Fifteen miles northeast of York, Castle Howard was first built in 1699. Castle Howard is home to a magnificent furniture collection as well as collections of paintings, porcelain and statuary, acumulated by many generations of the Howard family.

Castle Howard is unquestionably one of Britain's finest stately homes, the current buildings mostly dating from the 18th Century. Sir John Vanbrugh designed this elegant facade famously used as a location for the Brideshead Revisited television series. The spirit of Sebastian Flyte looms large at Castle Howard.

Hawksmoor's Pyramid of 1728 is sited along a ridge in the grounds of Castle Howard and contains a huge bust of Lord William Howard.

At the head of the drive at Castle Howard is a large obelisk that commemorates the victories of the Duke of Marlborough.

One of the great medieval castles of England.
