The Normans built the first castle in Cockermouth in 1134.

When the Normans built the first castle at Cockermouth They reused stone from the Roman settlement at Papcastle.

A great medieval castle arose in the late middle ages making Cockermouth a strong political force.

After the Civil War Cockermouth Castle was slighted by Parliamentary order, and today only romantic ruins survive.

The castle at Cockermouth is not open to the public except on a few ocassions throughout the year.

One of the great medieval castles of England.
