Colchester Castle was built in about 1080 on the site of a Roman temple dedicated to the emperor Claudius. Colchester had been the first Roman capital of Britain, and the castle itself was built from salvaged Roman remains giving it a unique look unlike any other castle in England.

The keep is the largest in Europe and has been turned into a fantastic museum housing the town's Roman and British artifacts.

According to the Colchester Castle official website, Colchester Castle Museum is situated in Castle Park at the eastern end of the High St. The museum is just a five minute walk from the bus station and Colchester Town railway station.
