Corfe Castle on Isle of Purbeck near Swanage in Dorset has some wonderful 11th Century ruins, although there was probably a Saxon castle on the site in the 9th Century.

King John improved the defences and later Henry III constructed additional walls. Corfe Castle remained in the hands of the monarchy until 1572 when Queen Elizabeth I sold it to her dancing master, Sir Christopher Hatton.

In 1982 the ruins of Corfe Castle were bequeathed to the National Trust. Corfe Castle is one of the South of England's lovliest ruined castles.
