All that remains visible today of the great castle at Devizes is a mound with some foundations.

Devizes Castle was at the heart of 12th century civil war between King Stephen and Queen Matilda. During the period Devizes castle was almost continually besieged. Then after a few centuries of quiet Cromwell besieged it again during the next Civil War.
