Dudley Castle was built by the Normans in about 1071AD. It was built in classic motte and bailey style on a hill close to the present centre of town.

John Dudley who was later beheaded for trying to put Lady Jane Grey on the throne of England. rebuilt the castle in the Tudor period.

The castle was burned in a disasterous fire in the 1720s and has stood as an impressive ruin ever since. Dudley castle is said to be haunted and overnight ghost hunting expeditions are now a popular addition to the range of activities available at the castle.

The entire castle is now enclused within the precint of Dudley Zoo.

One of the great medieval castles of England.
