Ellesmere in Shropshire had a castle for a very short time. Founded just after the Norman conquest, Ellesmere Castle was a motte and bailey fortification abandoned within a few years of being built.

Today the motte is covered with a small woodland with a bowling green on the top where the castle proper once stood. Free to walk up to, the view over Ellesmere is rather pretty.

One of the great medieval castles of England.
