Guildford Castle
Guildford Castle was built in 1067(?) AD
Castle Street, Guildford
GU1 3TU
Guildford Castle replaced a motte and bailey castle erected soon after 1066 by the Norman invaders. The stone tower we see today was built during the 12th century.
During the reign of King Henry III Guildford Castle was one of the most luxurious royal residences in England. However the castle slowly declined in status and upkeep and was eventually bought In 1611 by a local merchant, Francis Carter. Les than 20 years later the roof and floors of the tower were removed and Guildford Castle's life came to an end.
The land is now a municipal park so everyone is free to explore Guildford Castle from dawn till dusk but there is a small charge for visiting the tower. Ample parking around town.
One of the great medieval castles of England.
