A 15th Century Gatehouse is all that remains today of the old Hertford Castle on the banks of the river Lea.

Queen Elizabeth I spent much of her childhood at Hertford Castle which was in its day a fine palace.

The castle gatehouse now houses council offices and is not generally open to the public. However, if you call in advance you should be able to organise a short tour with knowledgeable staff.
