Hever Castle

Hever Castle was built in 1270 AD

Hever, Edenbridge

TN8 7NG

Hever Castle was the birthplace of Anne Boleyn, second wife of Henry VIII and mother of Queen Elizabeth I. King Henry came and stayed at Hever Castle at least nine times, holding court in the alcove at one end of the long gallery built by Anne's father. Such details are the stuff of Hever Castle.

When you arrive at hever you will find a small square castle fully intact surrounded by a full moat and still accessed by a real drawbridge. Past the portcullis the inner counrtyard of Hever Castle is a beautiful medieval timbered structure with inviting windows. Cross the courtyard and enter the castle through a very large and practical wooden door.

Hever was begun in 1270 by William de Hever but only the gatehouse survives from the original buildings. The interior of Hever features some excellent Tudor furniture, portraits, and tapestries. Naturally enough there are plenty of exhibited objects and information relating to Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. The Astor family owned hever at the beginning of the 20th Century and we have them to thank for much of what we see today.

The current owners have been good about supplying information to visitors, so if you see a particular picture, carving or architectural detail you want to know more about, there is invariably the information you require close at hand.

Visitors with children will be delighted to learn that Hever Castle is home to mazes and an adventure playground that is well constructed and large enough to keep the young ones happy for ages. The formal italian gardens are a treat for grown ups, with roses, impressive wysteria, and lots of ancient roman sculptures.

Hever Castle is a great English Castle and well worth a visit

One of the great medieval castles of England.
