A sad end

Hopton has one of those tragic little histories that litter English history. Built in Norman times it fell to disuse until the Civil War. A small garrison of Cromwell's forces held Hopton whilst besieged by the Royalist army for three weeks. In late February 1644 When all was lost many refused to surrender and chose to fight to the last man. It seems that those who did surrender were were killed and thrown in 'a muddy pit'. Every single man of the Hopton garrison was killed and the castle slighted and abandoned. Today, a ruined keep is all that is left to remember the dead of Hopton Castle,
