Launceston Castle sits perched on top of a large natural mound right in the Centre of this Cornish market town.Originally the site of pre-norman fortifications, Launceston Castle was rebuilt in stone by Richard, Earl of Cornwall, younger brother of King Henry III.

Launceston castle was in such disrepair by the end of the Civil War that there was no need to 'slight' the defences (make the castle unprotectable) as was commonly done to many castles during that period.

Launceston Castle is nowadays looked after by English Heritage and is open for viewing all year round. It really is a lovely rui and well worth a visit.
