Mountfitchet Castle was a classic 11th Century Motte and Bailey Stronghold, Built by William the Conqueror to command control of the Stort valley in Essex.Coins and Red Samian-ware found at the Castle indicate an earlier roman presence on the site.

This is the only known istance of a wooden pallasade motte & bailey castle to be reconstructed on its original site. Therefore visitors get a true understanding of these well known but misunderstood structures.

A hands-on craft centre and animal rescue mini-zoo make for an enjoyable day for younger visitors too.
