Newark Castle was built in 1130 AD
Castle Gate, Newark
NG24 1
The ruins of Newark Castle which sit in a park in the heart of Newark town beside the river Trent was the first british castle to be rennovated at public expense to serve as a place for the general public to wander at will.
Originally built by the wonderfully named Alexander the Magnificent, the Bishop of Lincoln, the castle ruins we see today date from the 12th Century.
Only twenty percent of the original castle still stands, But the parts still standing are well preserved and enable visitors to get up close to a lot of the detailing at higher levels..
The true treasure of Newark Castle is the gatehouse which is the most complete example of a Romanesque gatehouse to survive in England.
The royal connections at Newark Castle are strong and King John actually died here in 1216. The castle is open daily to visitors who may read about the castle story in the Gilstrap Tourist Information Centre which is located in the castle grounds.
One of the great medieval castles of England.
