Nottingham Castle
Nottingham Castle was built in 1067 AD
Friar Lane,
Off Maid Marian Way,
Nottingham

Robin Hood would not recognise Nottingham Castle these days. The old 11th century earthwork motte and bailey fortress is almost entirely gone, leaving only a huge twin-towered gatehouse and curtain wall above ground.
Deep in the rock upon which Nottingham Castle was built, there is still a nextwork of medieval passageways to visit. The castle cave tours have lots of steps and are quite arduous, but fascinating.
At the base of the Nottingham Castle rock stands "Ye Trip to Jerusalem" pub, which has a good claim to be the oldest public house in England. Do visit this amazing building hollowed into the rock itself.
Where the castle once stood, there is now a magnificent 17th century mansion which houses a great museum and fine art gallery.
One of the great medieval castles of England.
