Not a castle at all in the modern sense of the word, but the name of a splendid ancient hillfort near Hampstead Norreys, close to Newbury in Berkshire.

Perborough Castle is a 14 acre site that lies on the chalky downs of west berkshire. Archaeological evidence suggests it was a lightly-defended sites containing no more than a few rubbish pits (which are the obvious sign of continued occupation).

There is no picturesque medieval ruin here, but after the long walk up to the top of the hill, you will find the view from Perborough Castle over the downs is spectacular.

One of the great medieval castles of England.
