Since the days of William the Conqueror almost a thousand years ago the Tower of London has stood at the eastern edge of the city of London, the country's greatest castle guarding the greatest city.
Having been a royal palace, royal mint, seat of government, a prison, a zoo and home of the Crown Jewels, the tower boasts a history few if any other castles can match.
The Tower of London started off as just the central white toer whh remained largely unchanged for over a century after it was built from Normandy Stone imported specially for its construction. By1285, the White Tower had been envelopedby two curtain walls and a huge moat.
The beefeaters (the uniformed guards) will tell you wonderful stories of the inhabitants of the castle and look out for the Ravens. Legend has it that if the big black birds ever leave the tower, England shall fall.
The Tower of London is a world heritage site. Best arrived at by Underground train. Just go to Tower Hill Tube Station on the circle line.
One of the great medieval castles of England.
