No other castle has a closer association with Arthurian legend than the proud storm battered ruins of Tintagel Castle on the Cornish Coast.

It all stems from Geoffrey de Monmouth's 'History of Britain' written in 1139 which claimed that Tintagel was the birthplace of King Arthur.

In 1145 Reginald, Earl of Cornwall built his Castle on the promentory and it is these ruins we see today. Rather than from a great siege, the castle simply fell into disuse in the fourteenth century , probably due in part to the erosion that makes it so spectacular today.

Merlin's cave, below the castle is a great place to visit but do beware of the tides.

The Castle is open 10-4 most days in winter and till 6.00pm in Summer. There is ample parking and lots of visitor information. Disabled access can be difficult during particularly bad weather due to the rocky nature of the site .
