Torrington Castle was built in 1340 AD
Castle Street
EX38 8AA
Torrington Castle was built in 1340 by Richard de Merton and after a long period of decline was finally demolished in 1780.
The town of Torrington played a significant role in the Civil War, specifically, the Battle of Torrington (1646), but it seems the castle was already so ruined that it did not feature in the battle.
The last surviving part of the castle became the town school and is now a community centre.
One of the great medieval castles of England.
