Walmer Castle is a massive squat tudor fortress near Deal in Kent. It was built on the order of King Henry VIII in 1539. It is much lower than earlier castles because it was designed to stand up to cannon fire which was changing the face of warfare at the time.

The castle at Walmer is the official residence of the Lords Warden of the Cinque Ports, the last of whom, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother used to come and stay during the summer. Her private rooms are now open to the public. On the top of the round towers visitors find cannon still pointing out toward the water, defending the island from attack.

The museum has some fascinating exhibits including the room where Lord Wellington died in 1852. Just for good measure they have a pair of his famous boots on display.

Two other former Lords Warden, William Pitt and the second Earl of Granville are largely responsible for the wonderful landscaped grounds around the castle.

One of the great medieval castles of England.
