Warkworth Castle in Northumberland, dates from the 12th Century.The design of the curtain wall is unusual because they incorporated an earlier wall into it's construction.

Semi-octagonal towers also add to the overall effect of a squat, robust and compact castle. Now run by English Heritage Warkworth Castle sits above a loop of the river coquet near Morpeth.

The history of Warkworth Castle is bound to the story of the famous Percy family, although ownership passed to King Henry VIII in 1537

Sakespeare fans will like to know that the opening scene of Shakespeare's play "Henry IV" is set here.
