Samuel Pepys described Windsor Castle as "The most romantic castle that is in the world" and he may well have a point.

Sitting on a rocky outcrop overlooking the river Thames as it meanders across the flat plain to the west of London, Windsor Castle is an awsome sight.

It is the largest occupied castle in the whole world and the place that the royal family call home. Buckingham palace may be their official 'residence', but windsor is where they live.

The chappel within the castle walls holds the remains of eight past monarchs including Henry VIII. In earlier times Windsor had been a place of pilgrimage because of relics such as the bones of the priest John Schorn who famously "conjoured the devil into a boot."

Windsor was besieged twice (1194 and 1216) during the reign of Prince John and was briefly bombarded by Sir Thomas Fairfax during the civil war but otherwise escaped the ravages of time largely unscathed. Fantastic carvings in the state apartment and and the wonderous St. Georges chappel are highlights of any visit to Windsor Castle.

The skyline of the castle has changed much over the years, most recently it was significantly altered in the early nineteenth century by Sir Jeffry Wyattville who raised the height of the roud tower by 33 feet to make it "more dramatic".

More than 1,000 rooms hide an unrivalled collection of artworks and beautiful furniture. However, for many people the real treasure is the atmosphere of this astonishing castle that no visitor should miss.

One of the great medieval castles of England.
